Why This Gluten-Free Chili Recipe is a Winner

  • Naturally Gluten-Free and Wholesome: Unlike many pre-made chili options that use flour as a thickening agent, this homemade chili is naturally gluten-free. This means you can serve it to your gluten-free friends and family without worrying about special ingredients. The combination of ground beef, beans, and tomatoes creates a hearty and fulfilling meal.
  • Customizable to Your Taste: One of the best things about chili is its versatility. This recipe serves as a fantastic base that you can customize with your favorite toppings. We recommend shredded cheese, a dollop of sour cream (or Greek yogurt), chopped green onions, fresh cilantro, and even a side of gluten-free cornbread for dipping.
  • Dairy-Free Adaptable: If you’re also dairy-free, this chili is easily adaptable! Simply substitute dairy-based toppings with vegan alternatives, such as vegan yogurt or cheese. This makes it a great option for those with multiple dietary needs.
  • Perfect for Meal Prep: This chili recipe is fantastic for meal prepping. Make a big batch on the weekend and enjoy delicious, healthy lunches or dinners throughout the week. It also freezes well, making it a convenient option for busy weeknights.
  • Crowd-Pleasing Flavor: The rich, savory flavors of this chili are sure to please everyone, from kids to adults. It’s a guaranteed hit at potlucks, parties, and family gatherings.

Tips for the Best Gluten-Free Chili

  • Ground Beef Alternatives: While we love ground beef in this recipe, you can easily substitute it with ground turkey or even ground chicken for a leaner option. The flavor will be slightly different, but still delicious.
  • Bean Variety: Feel free to experiment with different types of beans. Kidney beans are a classic choice, but black beans, pinto beans, or even black-eyed peas would work well.
  • Spice It Up: If you like a little heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or use hot smoked paprika instead of sweet smoked paprika. You can also add a chopped jalapeno pepper for extra flavor and spice.
  • Slow Cooker Option: This recipe can easily be adapted for the slow cooker. Simply brown the ground beef and onions in a skillet, then transfer everything to your slow cooker. Cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours.
  • Leftover Magic: Leftovers will keep well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop. For longer storage, freeze the chili in airtight containers for up to 3 months.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon neutral oil like avocado
  • 2 pounds ground beef organic grass-fed
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 5 cloves garlic finely minced
  • 28 ounce canned diced tomatoes with liquid
  • 14 ounce can kidney beans drained
  • ¼ cup tomato paste
  • ¼ cup chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons cumin
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 cup beef broth

Instructions

  • In a large pot or Dutch Oven, heat the oil then sauté the onions and garlic over a medium heat. Add the ground beef.
  • Break up the ground beef as it cooks, until browned. Drain the fat from pot before adding the tomato paste, and all the spices. Stir to fully coat and cook for a couple minutes to meld. Add in the diced tomatoes, beef broth, and beans.
  • Bring the chili to a boil before reducing to a simmer.
  • Simmer for at least 20 minutes, until the ground beef is tender. Garnish chili with toppings of choice.

Notes

Use ground turkey: If you don’t want to use ground beef, this chili recipe will also work well with ground turkey.

Switch up the beans: Other types of canned beans will work too, we like black eyed peas in chili.

Adjust the heat: Add a little more heat to your chili by using hot smoked paprika instead of sweet smoked paprika.

Leftovers: Leftovers will keep well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, and can be heated through in the microwave or on the stovetop.
